What Goes on a PTI Label and How to Print One

PTI Label PTI Label

If you’re packing fresh produce, your labels need to do more than just stick—they need to trace. PTI (Produce Traceability Initiative) labels are built to follow each box from field to store, and that means including the right info in the right format.

Here’s a clear breakdown of what goes on a PTI label—and how to print them yourself with a thermal printer and the right labels.

What Information Should Be On a PTI Label?

PTI Label Requirements

PTI labels include several required data points that help track produce through the supply chain:

  1. GS1-128 Barcode – This barcode contains the GTIN (Global Trade Item Number), the Lot Number, and the Voice Pick Code. It follows the Code 128 format. You’ll need to purchase your GTIN through GS1 US.
  2. Commodity/Variety (Text) – This is the product name, typically in all caps. If it’s too long, a mix of uppercase and lowercase is fine.
  3. Pack Style – Lists the pack quantity and weight (e.g. “12 x 1 lb”).
  4. Country of Origin – Usually formatted as “Product of USA” or similar.
  5. Packer/Shipper Info – Includes the name, location, and sometimes logo of the packer or shipper. A supplier ID or UPC tracking number is often added here.
  6. Pack Date – Displayed in a box, using a three-letter month abbreviation and date (e.g. “APR 10”).
  7. Voice Pick Code – This 4-digit code is generated using a CRC16 algorithm based on the GTIN, Lot Number, and Pack Date. It’s used with warehouse voice-pick systems.

Make sure all this info is printed clearly, both in text and barcode, to ensure your produce stays traceable from field to store.

How to Print PTI Labels Yourself

You don’t need expensive software or a warehouse setup to print PTI labels. Here’s a simple way to get started:

  1. Set up a label template

Use Word, Excel, or Google Docs to create a basic label layout. You’ll need space for:

    • Human-readable text (product name, pack style, country of origin, etc.)
    • A barcode (usually GS1-128)
    • Pack date, shipper info, and voice pick code
  2. Generate your barcode

You can use free online tools or GS1's DataBar tools to create a GS1-128 barcode with your GTIN, lot number, and voice pick code. Some growers use Excel-based barcode fonts or plugins.

  3. Export or connect to your printer

Once your layout is ready, you can export the label as a PDF or print directly from your program.

  4. Use the right thermal labels and printer

Load your thermal printer with the appropriate label size (2” x 4” or 3” x 4”) and print in batches. Make sure your printer supports the format you’re using and test the barcode to ensure it scans cleanly.

  5. Keep a consistent process

    • Use the same template for every box
    • Pull pack dates automatically from your records if possible
    • Store label rolls at packing stations to avoid delays

This simple setup is enough for many small farms and packing teams to stay PTI-compliant without needing a full traceability software system.

Why Thermal Labels Work Best for PTI

When you’re labeling high volumes during harvest, thermal labels and printers help you move faster and stay organized with:

    • Fast, smudge-free printing
    • No ink or toner to manage
    • Great for cold storage and transit

Use direct thermal labels for short-term use (like same-week shipping). For longer shelf life or refrigerated storage, go with thermal transfer labels—they’re more durable.

Label Placement Tips

Where you place the label matters too. For easier scanning and fewer delays:

    • Stick it on a flat surface near a corner—not on flaps
    • Place it in the same spot on every box
    • Keep it away from seams or tape that might wrinkle or tear it

These small steps can help avoid relabeling and speed up inspection.

Stay Compliant and Keep Things Moving

Getting PTI labeling right isn’t just about ticking boxes—it helps protect your business, your buyers, and your supply chain. With the right setup, you can print labels that meet requirements, scan easily, and hold up through shipping and storage.
